How PIN Protection Works

Add a mandatory 6-digit PIN to any shared document for an extra layer of access control.

How PIN Protection Works

PIN protection adds a second layer of authentication to your secure document links — similar to two-factor authentication but simpler.

Setting a PIN

When you share a document via Share Securely, toggle on Require PIN. A random 6-digit PIN will be generated automatically. You can click Regenerate to get a new one.

Do not share the PIN in the same email as the document link. The whole point of the PIN is to require the recipient to receive it through a separate channel (e.g., a text message or phone call).

What the Recipient Sees

When the recipient opens the secure link, they'll see a PIN entry screen before the document loads. They must enter the correct PIN to proceed.

An incorrect PIN shows an error message. There is currently no limit on PIN attempts, but each failed attempt is logged in the document's audit trail.

Changing or Removing a PIN

  1. Open the document
  2. Click Share Securely
  3. Uncheck Require PIN and click Copy Link or Send Email to save the updated settings

How Secure Is It?

The PIN is stored in our database and checked server-side when the file is requested. The actual PDF is never served without a valid PIN — it's not just a UI lock but a real server-side access control.
